Some Details of Living in Sierra Vista, Arizona

Let me tell you about our little town, Sierra Vista, Arizona, in Cochise County. We are located SouthEast of Tucson by about 70 miles. Sierra Vista, at 4700 ft. elevation, is a high-desert town surrounded by picturesque mountains. They are the Huachuca Mountains, the Mule Mountains, the Whetstone Mountains, and the Dragoon Mountains. The higher elevation means the climate here is cooler than Tucson and even more cooler than Phoenix. Nearby cities are Tombstone, 17 miles away and famous for the OK Corral, and Bisbee, 30 miles away and famous for its copper mines and quaint shops. The nearest Mexican border crossing is at Naco (30 Miles East), a small town near Bisbee, but there are much larger towns at crossings in Nogales (50 Miles West) and Douglas (60 Miles East). The largest employer in Sierra Vista is Fort Huachuca, located immediately to the West of town.

Fort Huachuca is nestled at the North end of the Huachuca mountains, and is a U.S. Army Post which staffs full-time enlisted and officer personnel. Fort Huachuca employs full-time civilian Department of Defense contractors on Post as well as off Post. Some of the offices located in Fort Huachuca are: The Electronic Proving Ground (EPG), The Information Systems Engineering Command (ISEC), The US Army Intelligence Center and School, The Joint Interoperability Test Command (JITC), The US Army NETCOM/ 9th Army Signal Command (ASC), etc. Some of the DOD contractors in the area are: General Dynamics, Computer Sciences Corporation, MITRE Corporation, Lockheed Martin Corporation, SIGNAL Corporation, Emergent Technologies, Newtech Systems, ILEX Corporation, SAIC Corporation, RAM, Aegis Communications, Logicon, GTE, Comarco, Northrop-Grumman, and many other organizations. Approximately 12,000 military and civilian personnel live and/or work at Fort Huachuca.

The town of Sierra Vista grew up around the U.S. Army's Fort Huachuca in 1877 when it was established as a cavalry post. And, Sierra Vista continues to thrive today with a population of over 45,000.

Sierra Vista is proud to claim that, with our reliably good weather averaging 75 degrees in the summer and 50 degrees in the winter, we draw people from all walks of life: retired military personnel who had been stationed at Fort Huachuca in the past; retired civilians who refuse to spend another winter in their home state to be subjected to bone chilling temperatures, huge amounts of snow, and treacherous road conditions; and, of course, we have those who simply come to enjoy our mild climate for the winter months in their RV's. Additionally, the low cost of living, beautiful mountain views, and friendly nature of the residents are a major factor in why Sierra Vista is growing so rapidly.

The retired population accounts for nearly one-fourth of the population. One of our local development companies, Castle & Cook, in late 1996, broke ground on an age-restricted, gated community of single family homes here in Sierra Vista. The community is called Winterhaven. Winterhaven is built bordering an 18-hole golf course which is located in Country Club Estates. Winterhaven has built over 100 single-family homes at the present time and has just recently opened additional phases.

Sierra Vista boasts recreational facilities and nature preserves that draw people from all over the United States and Canada. Sierra Vista also boasts the Coronado National Monument, Ramsey Canyon Preserve, and the San Pedro River Riparian, etc. The Ramsey Canyon Preserve covers approximately 300 acres of plants, trees and wildlife in their natural habitat. A permanent spring-fed stream, favorable East-West orientation, and high canyon walls provide Ramsey Canyon with a moist, cool, and stable environment unusual in the desert Southwest. Bird watching groups come to Ramsey Canyon from all over the United States.

Southern Arizona is the home to many sporting events. It is not uncommon to see the young and old alike jogging and bicycle riding along the highways and side streets. We have three health clubs in Sierra Vista with activities such as: tennis, racquetball, indoor/outdoor pools, weight-lifting equipment, aerobics, etc. The City of Sierra Vista has an indoor wave pool facility, available to the public. We have two 18-hole golf courses within the City of Sierra Vista. The Pueblo del Sol (PDS) Course is a georgeous, well-maintained course positioned within the Country Club Estates community of single-family homes; and the Mountain View Course is a reasonably priced, public course which is located on Fort Huachuca, but is now directly accessible and operated by the City. Other nearby golf courses are Turquoise Valley (Naco, 30 miles), San Pedro (Benson, 28 Miles), Del Lago (near Tucson, 45 Miles) and Kino Springs (Nogales, 50 miles). Golf is a year-round activity here.

The "The Mall at Sierra Vista" was completed in October 1999. It includes stores such as Dillards, Sears, and a variety of specialty stores. It also has a theatre complex of 10 state-of-the-art movie theatres designed for your comfort and viewing pleasure. There are also a wide range of eating delights in the Mall's food court.

We are proud to offer activities in our Veterans' Memorial Park such as Festival of the Southwest, Art in the Park, Octoberfest, and an evening summer series that includes blues, jazz, pop and rock ensembles. And, in Buena High School, the Sierra Vista Symphony performs regularly. A calendar of events includes nationally known artists.

The Buena High School accommodates 2,500 students. It offers the "education row" opportunity for students to take college courses at no charge on a space-available basis. Additionally, we have branches of the University of Arizona and the University of Phoenix located in Sierra Vista, along with the two-year community college, Cochise College, which offers a program for an associate's degree.
